I’ve mentioned it a little bit on Twitter, but this week I’m doing a mini-cleanse/detox thing. Don’t ask me which one, I made the medically sound decision to semi make it up as I went along. But no need to call the paramedics yet, it’s pretty simple — lots of raw veggies, limited cooked ones, no meat, no dairy, no gluten, no ultra-processed foods of any kind (I say ‘ultra’ because I’ve been noshing on Lara bars for snacks). Lots of low sugar juices. Lots of kombucha. Tons of water and detox tea.

This is the first time I’ve done anything like this. What brought it on? Oh, let’s see. I’ve been to a party of some sorts for 3 of the last 4 weekends. I made carnitas. Sunday night we had steaks. I kind of want to throw up a little bit even thinking about it.

I had noticed my skin getting a little weird, and while at first I chocked it up to the changing seasons, eventually I had to face hard facts. Side note: Did you know your skin is a great indicator of what’s going on inside your body? Stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, lack of water — they ALL show up in your skin. So if you’re not glowing, it might be time to make a change!

HOWEVER. Even though after a few days I’m feeling pretty good and have definitely dropped a few el bees, the craving for food has settled in. Not like pizza or anything gross. Ok, that’s a lie. You know what I’m craving? Some fried chicken. And mashed potatoes. Without the side effects, please!

I’m doing the gentle cleanse/detox diet thingy until Friday evening; it ends just in time for my regular date night with Joe (how convenient). I can’t get too crazy, first regular meal out of the shotgun. Any suggestions? I’m kind of thinking veggie or fish tacos at our favorite little Mexican joint might be the ticket.

Mexican food. Surprise, surprise.

Have you ever done a cleansing program before?

  1. umm..no, i haven’t. but it’s a bit wild that you posted this because i’ve been considering it! it’s only been on my mind for the last couple of days, but i’m skipping dairy and as many wheat/corn/flour items as possible. still not skipping the vino, though. that will have to be a gradual process….

kudos to you! cleanses sound hard!

  2. I think that first portion is every girls dream.. to be able to eat whatever you want and fit into a size 2… except for those “naturally thin” ones. sigh.

  3. Every Sunday night I go to bed saying I’m going to try a cleanse to start the week off right…but then I NEVER do it!! I’m inspired…maybe next week I’ll give it a go!!

  4. I’ve been wanting to try out a cleanse for a few months now, but haven’t had the courage to give up my favorite foods. Kudos to you, my friend!

  5. Oh, good job Victoria!! Ben and I did the Clean cleanse {after reading about it on your blog!}. It was easy, then super tough and then a little bit easier. You only have one more day to go!! Woohoo :)

  6. I think it’s great you’re doing one! I’ve done a few cleanses and really love them. You’re motivating me to get moving on another one! And Mexican food is always my first craving too :) xx

  7. Yup, I did my first cleanse earlier this year. I got it from Whole Foods and a family member of mine had done it (so I knew it was safe lol). A healthy vegan doing a cleanse, why? My body does not react very well when I eat wheat, so I wanted to cut it out and cleanse! It’s like a fresh start :) Hope your not starving too much! And I would choose Mexican for my first meal too, yum!

  8. My skin looks like CRAP so maybe it’s time to start doing something like that – plus sleep more and less caffiene. Best of luck to ya!

  9. Good for you Victoria! I tried the master cleanse once and only lasted 4 days. But 4 days of digesting nothing but water with lemon, cayenne pepper and maple syrup takes some serious commitment. Haven’t done one since although I’ve recently given up my weekday wine habit, which is a HUGE deal for me. I’ve already dropped a few pounds and my skin looks better. Wine is now only reserved for the weekends.

  10. What tea are you drinking? I tried t o click and it came up blocked as “malicious”

going to start it again after Vegas…

  11. Remember how Chanos was the food of choice for late nights at USC? (Even though let’s be honest, it only seemed good after downing several drinks). The undergrads here have fried chicken and biscuits… after the bar… I still think its so random!

Thanks for the skin reminder. I walked into Whole Foods last Monday looking for some new product to try. I need to start by paying more attention to what goes in first. :)

    • Confession: I had Chanos once after a “good” night during freshman year. I was so
sick the next day that I never went back. Whether from the food or the booze, it’s
      unclear…

  12. I want that rust Sanctuary cowl pullover. It needs to be on me.

Oh I remember the days when I’d do cleanses and diets and now I don’t have the energy for it all. I just go to spin class and then eat what I want — the lazy way to maintain.

    I commend you!!!!

  13. Good for you… cleanses are rough, but good for you… I did BluePrint at the beginning of the summer and will probably do it again next month… it did wonders for my stomach!

  14. We can always treat ourselves with some sweets or guilty pleasures, it’s in our human nature. Aaaand eating all this things is a good motivation to workout or go to the gym often. ;)
