Do or Don’t: Pantyhose

Mention the word ‘pantyhose’ to me, and until very recently, I conjured up images of uncomfortable, itchy and shiny things that I was forced to wear for church, on Christmas and at Easter. These days, I try to avoid anything that remotely resembles hosiery…the closest I come is in the fall and winter, when I begrudgingly break out dark colored tights to wear with skirts and dresses. But on some days, even those are a pain.

However, a few people have recently mentioned to me that they’re totally back on board the pantyhose train, with a lot of them crediting this to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, formerly known as Miss Kate Middleton. There’s some debate about whether royal protocol requires her to wear pantyhose for certain events, but I have to say, it really does have a ‘finishing’ effect on the skin!

My friend Maryann recently invested in a pair of pantyhose, and according to her, these things have come a long way since I was pulling them on as a girl in the 90s. She reported that her stems were looking ‘shimmery and toned’ in the hose, which really got me thinking. There are all these leg lotions out there (like this and this) that are supposed to highlight your legs and make them look muscular and camera ready. I’m wondering if it would just be easier to get a really good pair of pantyhose!

What do y’all think? Pantyhose…are they coming back, or will you stay bare legged?

  1. In my city during summer days the weather has been very hot… Usually not very popular pantyhose… But on the other hand, especially if no sun tanning and have a natural skin, sometimes as you mentioned it will be so nice pantyhose… And seems beautiful as in these photographs… Thanks and Love, nia

  2. Yeah, I’m not really a fan myself…but I guess kate doesn’t really have a choice because if you are going to have lunch at, say, the President’s house, you should probably wear them (c:

  3. I’m doing an internship this summer and started off wearing hose the first week since I didnt know the office dress code. I was pleasantly surprised – they definitely made my legs look better. That said, the heat index has been insane (~114) so I think I’m gonna restrict them for when they are truly needed.

  4. I wear them for work and actually really, really like them (unless it’s 100 degrees out, but I pretty much hate everything when it’s that hot :). They make everything look a bit more polished and, in my case, more tan!

  5. Ohh I’m definitely a no panty hose gal when I can get away with it. Although in DC summers… it is criminal to enforce a dress code with panty hose. I’ll send some heatwaves your way if you can send some of that rain and cooler air here Victoria. That or I should just visit/ move away from this inferno to San Fran!

  6. Pantyhose rules: Get them at a department store and pay more for a better quality and fit. More expensive hose are made of silk or a higher grade nylon which looks like a silk. It is much more classy and dignified to wear hose with a skirt or dress, not to mention how much better your feet feel. I think the no hose fad is a low class one. Hmmm….I don’t see any tattoos on Kate either, not even a little butterfly on her ankle. Not surprising she married a prince. You have to have class to land one of those guys.

  7. After stuffing myself into hose for years!! no more. I haven’t worn pantyhose in years!
