Monday Musings: On Memorial Day (and a giveaway!)

Happy Monday! This week, I feel like I don’t even mind that the week is starting again, since next week will be a three day weekend and the start of summer.

Okay, okay, so it’s not officially summer until June 21, but everybody knows that with its picnics and barbecues and beach trips, Memorial Day might as well be summer’s opening day. Wherever you are, I hope the weather is warming up!

This Monday’s question is simple: What do you plan on doing over the Memorial Day weekend?

And here’s a little extra incentive to comment. To celebrate summer 2011, and the upcoming three day weekend, I’m pleased to be hosting a spectacular Memorial Day giveaway! Consider it a big thank you to each and every one of you who stop by here and make this blog such a delight to write.

Here are the giveaway deets: One lucky reader will receive their choice of one Ina Garten cookbook (choose from any of books listed below), OR a set of four Fleur de Lys tumblers from Anthropologie (in the color of your choice, see below). I figured either would come in handy for anyone throwing a party this summer!

How to enter:

1. Leave one comment below letting me know your Memorial Day plans, or, if you have any other big vacations this summer that you’re excited about.

2. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, for a second entry, you can blog about the giveaway and let your readers know it’s happening! Feel free to use images from this post. Don’t forget to come back here and leave another comment along with a link to your post (this will serve as your second entry).

Entries must be submitted by 5pm Pacific time on Monday, May 30, 2011. One random winner will be chosen next Tuesday morning, May 31, 2011. Good luck!

  1. What a great giveaway! I love Ina and have had my eye on Barefoot in Paris.

Memorial Day for me is spent at a family lake house enjoying friends, family and lots of food!

    xo,
    Ashley

  2. Such cute tumblers, perfect for an ice cold lemonade when it’s actually warm enough to enjoy! I’m heading home to celebrate memorial day and my sister’s graduation from college — hope the weather holds out!

  3. Such a fabulous giveaway! I’m a huge Ina fan. And I’ve been wanting Barefoot in Paris :)

Memorial Day weekend will be filled with family, friends, beach & BBQs. Let’s hope the weather holds up!

  4. Well we used LAST weekend as our holiday weekend, does that count? Took a few days off and stayed in a vacation rental right on the Russian River. H e a v e n. The dog especially loved going for a dip whenever she wanted although I’m not sure what she thought of her first canoe ride! I will probably use Mem weekend to spring clean. Love it when the city clears out.

  5. I *LOVE* these summer pics…especially the very first one…*sigh* it makes me wish my plans were at the ocean for the weekend! But I do have some pretty awesome plans: it’s my 30th birthday on Saturday and I’m having a girl’s weekend with my mom and 3 sisters (c: It’s gunna be *awesome*! And because I’ve got a weakness for Anthro, I would have to go with the glasses…(c:

P.S.-I’m a HUGE Community fan…seriously the funniest thing around! Complete ditto on the making me laugh out loud…my husband always wants to know what is so funny, but *hello* you just can’t explain that kind of humor (c:

  6. Sadly I don’t have any big plans for the weekend. The weekend will consist of unpacking our household goods since we just got the word that our stuff will be delivered this Thursday. Yay! And even though I love Ina, I will have to go with those tumblers!

  7. Such a fun giveaway! I’ve been eyeing those glasses at Anthro forever!! We are headed to Richmond for Memorial Day for a party and to spend some time with Ben’s parents. Can’t wait!

  8. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the Barefoot Contessa!!! She is my idol!!!!!! I recently did a restaurant trend project on her for one of my Hospitality Management classes!! THis Memorial day weekend i will probably spend the day/weekend in the kitchen and on the grill concocting some of her many recipes!!!

  9. I just love Ina! I could watch her all day! I am heading to Powers Lake (short drive from Chicago) for the weekend and renting out a lake house with friends! Fingers crossed for good weather + cold drinks :)

  10. Ummm I love Ina!! :) I have *most* of her cookbooks! She’s the best! We’re just celebrating husband’s birthday this weekend! xo

  11. What an awesome giveaway!! I absolutely love Ina & I own all of her cookbooks. But I have been eyeing those tumblers from Anthro for quite sometime now. For Memorial Day this year I plan to go to the beach and cook up some of Ina’s Barbequed Chicken…YUM!

  12. Ohh I am a cook book hoarder… tough to pick which one , maybe Ina’s Parties! This weekend we are planning on chilling out, seeing Hangover II, taking a breadmaking class, hanging our curtains, BBQing… and hopefully a lot of eating and drinking!

  13. I’ll be spending my weekend celebrating one of my best friend’s weddings in Nashville! And hoping to get back to blogging soon….oops. Would love an Ina book – learning to cook is also on my to do list!
